International Driver's License and Overseas Driver's License
・International Driver's License
An international driver's license issued by a country that is a member of the 1949 Geneva Convention (excluding Japan) and a passport are required.
The validity period for driving in Japan of an international driver's license is one year from the date of issue and one year from the date of landing in Japan. However, if a person who is recorded in the Japanese resident basic register leaves Japan with confirmation of departure or permission to re-enter, obtains a new international driver's license during a stay of less than three months, and then re-enters Japan, the date of re-entry is not the starting date for the driving period of the international driver's license, so they will not be able to drive in Japan. In addition, even if the international driver's license was issued by a member country of the Geneva Convention, driving with an international driver's license issued in a format based on other treaties (such as the Vienna Convention) is not permitted in Japan.
・Foreign driver's license
A driver's license from one of five countries and one region (the Principality of Monaco, Switzerland, the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium and Taiwan) is required, along with a Japanese translation of the license issued by a person designated by government ordinance, and a passport.
A Japanese translation issued by the country's embassy or consulate in Japan, or by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), is required based on the applicant's application.
For Taiwan, a translation issued by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation), Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, or Zipplas Co., Ltd. is required.
The validity period is within the validity period of the foreign driver's license mentioned above and for one year from the date of landing in Japan (confirmed by the stamp on the passport showing the date of landing in Japan).
However, if a person who is recorded in Japan's Basic Resident Register re-enters Japan within less than three months of leaving the country, the date of re-entry will not be counted as the "date of landing (the starting date for the validity of your driving permit in Japan)."
